Sudoku for Kids — Four by Four First, Then Six by Six

A 9x9 sudoku asks a child to hold too much at once. A 4x4 asks exactly the same thinking of them in a space they can see all of, which is why it is where sudoku should start.

The small grid uses the numbers 1 to 4. Each row, each column and each two-by-two box holds all four, once each. Seven of the sixteen squares are filled in to begin with, and the rest follow from looking: this row already has 1, 3 and 4, so the gap is a 2. That single move, repeated, finishes the puzzle — and it is the same move that finishes a 9x9 twenty years later. Nothing is dumbed down here, just made smaller.

The 6x6 grid is the step up. Numbers 1 to 6, boxes that are two squares tall and three wide, and fourteen squares given. The rectangular boxes are the useful new idea: a child who has only seen square boxes has to look again at what a box actually is, which is any group the rule applies to.

Wrong numbers are flagged in red as they are placed. For a child working alone this matters more than it does for an adult — the alternative is discovering at the very end that something went wrong somewhere in the middle, with no way to find it, which is how a puzzle becomes a bad afternoon. Here a wrong number says so immediately and can be tapped away.

Every grid has exactly one answer, verified when it is generated, so a completed puzzle is never rejected. Numbers can be tapped in or typed. And "reveal a cell" is there for the moment before frustration, filling one square so the thread can be picked up again — it keeps count, which is a gentle way of showing progress across several sittings.

In a classroom, one tap generates a different grid for every child at the same difficulty, which makes this workable as a five-minute settling activity rather than a printing job.

How to play Sudoku for Kids

  1. Start with the 4 x 4 grid and the numbers 1 to 4.
  2. Find a row, column or small box with one square empty — the missing number goes there.
  3. Tap the empty square, then tap the number.
  4. A red square means that number is already in the row, column or box. Tap Erase and try another.
  5. Fill every square to finish, then tap "New puzzle" for a different one, or move up to 6 x 6.

Questions

What age is this for?

The 4x4 grid suits most children of about six upwards, as soon as they can read the numbers 1 to 4 and check whether one is already there. The 6x6 grid usually follows a year or two later.

Does a child need to be able to add?

No. Sudoku involves no arithmetic at all — the numbers are just four or six different symbols. It is pure elimination, which is why it works before mental maths does.

What are the rules of a 4x4 sudoku?

Each row, each column and each two-by-two box must contain the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 exactly once. That is the whole game, and it is the same rule a 9x9 uses with nine numbers.

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes, and in exactly one way. Uniqueness is checked while the puzzle is generated, so a child who fills the grid correctly is never told it is wrong.
