Typing Test — Sixty Seconds, Measured Honestly

A typing test measures two numbers that are easy to confuse. Speed is how fast your fingers move. Accuracy is how much of that movement was useful. Almost everyone can raise the first by twenty percent immediately by accepting more mistakes, which is why a speed figure quoted without an accuracy figure beside it means very little. This test always reports both.

Words per minute here follows the standard convention: one word is five characters including the space, and only words you typed correctly count towards it. A word you mistyped contributes nothing, no matter how quickly you got it wrong. That is stricter than tests which count raw keystrokes, and it produces a lower, more honest number — the one that actually corresponds to how much finished text you can produce in an hour.

The clock does not start when the page loads. It starts on your first keystroke, so reading the instructions, adjusting your chair or waiting for someone to stop talking costs you nothing. From there you get sixty seconds. A space commits the current word and moves you on, exactly as every typing test works — you cannot go back and repair a word once you have passed it, which is deliberate, because in real typing you either notice immediately or you do not.

The word pool is the hundred or so most frequent words in written English. That is a specific choice. Tests built on literary passages measure your reading of unfamiliar vocabulary as much as your typing, and tests built on pangrams measure something no one ever types. Common words isolate the mechanical skill, which is the thing you can actually train.

When the minute is up you get your WPM, your accuracy percentage, how many words you got right, and the full list of what you typed with the mistyped words struck through — hover any of them to see what you actually typed. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed; the entire test runs in your browser and your result never leaves the device.

How to play Typing Test

  1. Press "Start test" — the clock does not begin until your first keystroke.
  2. Type the highlighted word, then press space to move to the next one.
  3. The input box turns red as soon as what you have typed stops matching the word.
  4. Keep going for sixty seconds; there is a "Finish now" button if you want to stop early.
  5. Read your WPM and accuracy at the end, and check the word list to see exactly which ones you missed.

Questions

How is WPM calculated?

Using the standard convention: one word equals five characters including the space, divided by the elapsed time in minutes. Only correctly typed words count, so mistakes lower your speed as well as your accuracy.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical for someone comfortable with a keyboard, 60 to 80 is a fast touch typist, and above 100 is unusual. Accuracy matters as much as the raw number — 60 WPM at 98% is more useful than 75 WPM at 88%.

Can I fix a word after typing it wrong?

Not once you have pressed space, which is how typing tests work generally. You can correct a word with backspace while you are still on it — the box turns red the moment your text stops matching.

Does the timer start straight away?

No. It starts on your first keystroke, so there is no penalty for reading the instructions first or taking a moment to get settled.

Is the test free and does it need an account?

Free, with no account, no email and no download. The test runs entirely in your browser and your result is never uploaded anywhere.
