An Online Dice Roller for Board Games and Tabletop RPGs

Choose a die — d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 — set how many to roll and any modifier, and press Roll. The result shows the total in large type, every individual die underneath, and the modifier applied. Six-sided dice are shown as dice faces; everything else as numbers. The last dozen rolls stay listed below, so nobody has to remember what was rolled two turns ago.

For tabletop roleplaying games, you can type standard dice notation instead: 1d20+5, 3d8+2, 4d6-1. The notation box accepts up to a hundred dice and any die size, so a fireball's 8d6 or a strange homebrew d7 both work. When you roll a single d20 you can switch on advantage or disadvantage, the fifth-edition rule where you roll two d20s and keep the higher or the lower; the kept die is shown with the dropped one struck through next to it. A natural 20 or natural 1 on a single d20 is called out.

Fairness is the point of a dice roller, so this one does not use the quick shortcut most web roller code takes. Rolls come from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and a technique called rejection sampling makes sure every face of every die is exactly equally likely. The common shortcut, scaling a random number to the die size, very slightly favours low numbers; this method does not.

It is just as handy for board games when the dice have gone missing under the sofa, for classroom probability lessons — roll two dice a hundred times and watch seven come up most often — or for any decision you would rather leave to chance. It runs in your browser with nothing to install, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use the Dice Roller

  1. Pick a die: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100.
  2. Set how many dice to roll and any modifier, then press Roll.
  3. Or type dice notation such as 2d6+3 and press Roll.
  4. For a single d20, choose advantage or disadvantage to roll two and keep one.
  5. Read the total and each die; earlier rolls are listed below.

Questions

Are the rolls really random?

Yes. They use your browser's cryptographic random generator with rejection sampling, so every face of every die has exactly the same chance.

What does 2d6+3 mean?

Roll two six-sided dice, add them together, then add 3. The number before the d is how many dice; the number after is how many sides.

How do advantage and disadvantage work?

Roll two d20s and keep the higher (advantage) or the lower (disadvantage). Select a single d20 and choose the mode before rolling.

How many dice can I roll at once?

Up to 20 with the picker, or up to 100 of any size by typing dice notation.
