Educational Games That Actually Teach Something: A Guide for Classrooms and Home
Most "educational games" are a worksheet with points bolted on. The ones that work share a specific structure — fast retrieval, immediate feedback, short sessions — and a set of practical properties that decide whether a teacher can actually use them.
The phrase "educational game" covers two very different things. One is a game that happens to require a skill, so playing it builds the skill. The other is a drill with a points counter attached, which is a worksheet wearing a costume — and children identify it as one almost immediately.
The distinction matters less than people think, though, and not in the direction you would expect. A well-built drill with immediate feedback and short rounds is genuinely effective, more so than an elaborate game where the learning is buried under three minutes of animation per question. What actually determines whether something teaches is structure, not how much it looks like entertainment.
What the structure needs to do
The mechanism that makes practice stick is retrieval: pulling an answer out of memory rather than recognising it on a page. This is one of the better-established findings in learning research, and it is why a flashcard beats re-reading a list. Any game where the child has to produce an answer before seeing it is doing the right thing; any game where the answer is visible while they work is not.
Feedback has to be immediate and it has to include the right answer. Being told you were wrong teaches almost nothing. Being shown the correct answer at the moment you were wrong about it is where the correction happens. A game that just decrements a life counter has skipped the only part that mattered.
Sessions should be short. Two minutes of focused retrieval repeated over several days beats twenty minutes once, and the gap between sessions is doing real work — spaced repetition is not a productivity fad, it is one of the most reliably replicated effects in the field. Practically, this means a game with three-minute rounds that a child will play four times across a week is worth more than an elaborate one they complete once.
And the difficulty has to sit just past comfortable. Too easy and nothing is being retrieved; too hard and the child stops. This is the argument for games that let you narrow the scope — practising one times table rather than all of them is not a lesser version of the exercise, it is the correct version until that table is learned.
Choosing by age
Ages 4 to 6: no reading required. Matching and memory games work because the content is pictures, the rules are demonstrable without explanation, and there is no way to lose. This is also the age where a child genuinely competes with adults — memory games are not condescending at this age, they are close to fair.
Ages 5 to 8: single-operation arithmetic and letter recognition. Numbers up to ten, addition and subtraction only, and crucially no negative answers — showing a child 4 minus 9 before they have met negative numbers teaches confusion, not subtraction. Answers should be tappable rather than typed, because a keyboard covering half a tablet screen is a barrier that has nothing to do with maths.
Ages 7 to 11: this is the range that times tables, word searches, hangman and word scrambles are built for. Word scramble deserves a specific mention because every letter is visible, which makes it far more forgiving than hangman and lets a wide age range play at one table without anyone being left behind.
Ages 10 and up: mixed practice and speed. This is where drilling one skill at a time stops being the right approach and mixed retrieval takes over, and where a timer becomes useful information rather than pressure. Typing practice belongs here too — it is a genuine life skill that almost no curriculum teaches directly.
The practical checklist
This is the part that decides whether a resource gets used, and it has nothing to do with pedagogy. A game that needs an account will not be used with a class of thirty, because thirty sign-ups is a lesson gone. A game that needs installing will not be used on school hardware, because that is an IT request with a multi-week turnaround. A game that needs a reliable connection will fail in the room with the bad wifi, which every school has.
Check the advertising specifically, and check it inside the playfield rather than around it. Ads adjacent to content are how free resources are funded and are not a problem. Ads between the keyboard and the board, or overlapping the cards, cause misclicks — which is precisely why they are placed there. For a class of children this is not a minor annoyance; it is the difference between a usable resource and a liability.
Check what is collected. A game that asks for a name, an age or a school is collecting data about children, and the bar for that should be very high. The good news is that for this category of game there is no technical reason to collect anything at all: a matching game or an arithmetic drill has no need for a server, so any data collection is a business decision rather than a requirement.
And check that it works on a projector. A surprising number of otherwise good resources use small bitmap graphics that fall apart when thrown at a wall, or layouts that assume a laptop screen. Games built with text and emoji rather than images scale to any size without degrading, which makes them usable for whole-class work as well as individual practice.
Word games earn their place
Word searches have a mixed reputation among teachers, and some of the criticism is fair — finding BUTTERFLY in a grid does not teach you what a butterfly is. What a word search does train is visual scanning and letter-pattern recognition, which is a real component of reading fluency, and it does so in a format children will do voluntarily. It is vocabulary reinforcement rather than vocabulary teaching, and it is honest work as long as nobody claims otherwise.
Hangman is the stronger educational game of the two, because it forces genuine deduction. Working out that a five-letter word with an E in fourth position and a clue about weather is probably not going to start with X is exactly the kind of reasoning that transfers. Hangman with a clue attached to every word is better still, because it turns a vowel-guessing grind into an actual inference problem.
Word scramble is the most inclusive of the three. Because all the letters are present, a struggling reader is not locked out, and the puzzle is purely about ordering. This makes it the best choice for a mixed-ability group working on the same task.
Arithmetic and typing: the two that pay off most
Times tables are the clearest case for game-based practice that exists. They must be recalled instantly to be useful, instant recall only comes from repetition, and repetition from a book is miserable. What matters is that the practice is randomised: a child who can recite the seven times table in order will still stall on 7 times 8 when it arrives out of sequence, because reciting and recalling are different skills and only the second one helps in a maths lesson.
Watch time per question rather than score once accuracy is consistent. A child reconstructing 8 times 7 by doubling will get it right and take four seconds, which looks identical to knowing it if you only count correct answers. The timer is what separates recall from reconstruction, and reconstruction is the stage before fluency, not fluency itself.
Typing is the skill with the largest gap between how useful it is and how rarely it is taught. Most children will type for the rest of their lives and almost none receive instruction in it. The important thing to know is that accuracy has to come before speed — training against a clock produces fast, wrong typing that costs more time in correction than the hurry saved. Untimed accuracy practice first, then a speed test to measure, is the right order.

What they are not is a curriculum. There is no progress tracking, no reporting, no assignment of work and no record of who played what — all of which follows directly from there being no accounts. If you need to know what a particular child has done, this is the wrong category of tool and you want a proper learning platform.
What they are good for is the specific job of short, repeated retrieval practice: a five-minute starter, a filler at the end of a lesson, something on a tablet at home, or a wet break on the projector. That is a narrow job, but it is a real one, and it is the job most of what gets called educational software is worst at.
