Halloween Word Search — Twelve Spooky Words in the Grid

A Halloween word search is one of those activities that does a surprising amount of work for how simple it is. It keeps a classroom occupied on the last afternoon before the holiday, it fills the gap at a party while everyone waits for food, and it works for a wide spread of ages at the same table — which very few Halloween activities manage.

Twelve words are hidden in a thirteen-by-thirteen grid: PUMPKIN, SKELETON, VAMPIRE, CAULDRON, COBWEB, ZOMBIE, GOBLIN, SPIDER, POTION, RAVEN, CANDY and WITCH. They run in all eight directions — across, back, down, up and along both diagonals — and cross one another wherever the layout allows, so a letter you have already used for one answer often belongs to another as well.

Claim a word by pressing on its first letter and dragging to its last. It behaves the same with a mouse, a trackpad or a fingertip, and the trail highlights as you move so you can see exactly what you are about to select. Getting it wrong costs nothing — the selection simply clears — so there is no reason to be tentative while you sweep the grid.

Press "New puzzle" and the same twelve words are placed in a completely different arrangement. That matters for a classroom in particular: every child can have a genuinely different grid rather than copying from a neighbour, and the same page stays usable across several groups in a single day without anyone seeing a puzzle twice.
